"The ache for home lives in all of us. The safe place where we can go as we are and not be questioned"
- Maya Angelou
So you are having a baby! Congrats!
Welcoming a new baby into the family is one of life’s most cherished moments, and capturing these precious moments with professional photography has become a must for many parents. Those first few days and weeks fly by; having a professional capture those moments frees you up to cuddle and savor your new baby without the pressure of trying to document those moments yourself.
When it comes to newborn photos there are two main types to consider: Lifestyle in-home sessions or traditional studio photography. Both have their unique appeal and advantages, so how do you decide which is the best fit for you? Let’s break down the difference to help you make an informed decision.
Traditional newborn photography takes place in a studio. These sessions are highly styled and often focus on posed images of the baby, often with artistic props and controlled lighting. Annie Dunigan photography does not offer traditional posed newborn photography. However, a lifestyle approach can be taken within a studio space, like in the photos below.
A life-style newborn session in a studio is fabulous if you prefer a clean, more curated look -like these where the floor-to-ceiling curtains gave it a soft, dreamy feel. If you are not in love with the look of your home, are in the middle of a move, or would just prefer to not worry about cleaning up, you may prefer to do a studio session.
Lifestyle In-Home Sessions:
Take place in the comfort of your home, focusing on authentic, natural moments that tell the story of your family’s new chapter. These sessions emphasize candid interactions, connection, and the warmth of your personal space.
Key Features of In-Home Sessions:
The Client Closet offers over 70 women’s dresses in all sizes for clients to borrow.
2. Natural, Unposed Moments: Lifestyle sessions capture real-life moments like cuddles on the couch, rocking your baby in the nursery, or siblings interacting with the new addition. The focus i on storytelling and emotion rather than perfect poses.
3. Incorporates Your Space and Style: Your home becomes part of the session, making the photos feel intimate and personal. The nursery, your favorite corner of the living room, or even your bed can all serve as backdrops, creating a timeless, connection to these early days.
4.Minimal Props: Lifestyle photography typically relies on natural lighting and avoids elaborate props. The simplicity keeps the focus on your baby and family dynamics. Some props that Annie Dunigan Photography incorporates include: building blocks with siblings, a favorite blanket or special memento, moses basket, or hat.
5. Flexibility: Sessions can adapt to your baby’s needs, whether they’re feeding, sleeping, alert, curious, etc. While traditional studio newborn sessions are generally shot within the first 10 days, life-style sessions can be done anytime in the first month. Annie Dunigan Photography loves to capture these within the first two weeks but if more time is needed due to post-partum healing or health concerns, that is no problem. Generally, newborn sessions are shot on the weekends during the day.
7. Outdoor Newborn Photos: an outdoor newborn session can be arranged during warm weather months. If you are wanting the entire session outdoors, it is important to consider that most sessions are during golden hour (an hour before sunset). In the summer months, this means that sessions are starting late in the evening (8pm etc). Typically, Annie Dunigan Photography shoots these between 20-60 minutes. The other option is to embrace the light during the day and incorporate outdoor shoots within your in-home shoot to help tell the story. While the light might be brighter/harsher during the day, it is still a powerful way of showing the setting where your story takes place.
8. Fresh 48 Hospital Session: Some clients choose to document the first hours with their newborn at the hospital. Fresh 48 sessions at Sparrow or McLaren can be added to one’s newborn session (or purchased as a stand-alone newborn session). Reach out for more details!
If you are interested in booking a newborn session or Fresh48, it is recommended that you reach out to book as soon as possible. If you prefer to wait until the first trimester is over, that is fine. However, since newborn sessions in-home typically take up to two hours, I want to ensure that we set aside the time needed. Once the contract and retainers is received you are on the books. Newborn sessions with Annie Dunigan Photography come with all the best images, so galleries are large (70+ images). The look of your photos (if they are darker/moodier or warmer) is impacted by the setting and light. Still have questions? Feel free to reach out.
Wishing you all the best during your pregnancy!
